Our largest and only significant colony was the Philippines. Since giving the Philippines independence we have maintained good relations with them. Many people in Puerto Rico want to become our fifty-first state. Hardly any want to become independent of us.

The Warsaw Pact was never a defensive alliance of countries united by socialist solidarity. It was an empire conquered by Russia and held together by force. When Mikhail Gorbachev indicated that Russian soldier would no longer shoot at demonstrators the Warsaw Pact collapsed and the Communist dictatorships in it were overthrown and replaced by democratic governments. Far from joining a "Russian Commonwealth" they joined NATO because what is what their democratic electorates wanted.

The United States and Great Britain have learned not to occupy countries that want to be independent. Russia still has not learned. I hope Russia will learn from its misadventure in Ukraine.

The way to achieve national greatness is not by conquering weaker countries; it is by achieving a high standard of living, a low crime rate, and a well functioning government. Germany and Japan currently have more affluence and better governments than when they were winning World War II. They have always had low crime rates.

We in the States have a high crime rate, but it is lower than it was in 1980.

 

The Warsaw Pact was designed so in any future war the fighting would be on non USSR territory and the soldiers and civilians being killed would not be USSR citizens.And give time for the USSR to mobilised its reserves.
