Ciorba: Well actually, most of the fruits and veggies we eat weren't as big 5 centuries ago. It takes a large amount of selective breeding and careful farming/tending to make them hueg (and tasty).
Same thing for many domestic animals. Dogs are the only exception that comes to mind.

An_Onymous: It's true. Corn is a particularly striking example; the wild plant it was developed from is a practically inedible, unremarkable-looking grass that looks nothing like modern corn. Wheat is also interesting in that it is hexaploid (has six copies of its genome) and it is thought by some that humans created this hexaploidy.
