Anonymous8: I may be a little late getting into this, but I looked this up when Robert Heinlein's sci-fi book, The Number of the Beast, came out and six of the oldest and the best ancient Greek manuscripts of the book of Revelation give the number as six-hundred, threescore (sixty) and six. I believe the number comes from adding the letter values (equivalent to a=1, b=2, etc.) of the name and one of the titles of the emperor Nero, a safe way to refer to someone who could easily have you thrown to the lions.
