House of Commons Speaker John Bercow has announced that he intends to block US President Donald Trump from addressing Parliament when Trump visits the UK later this year.

It is customary for visiting presidents to address MPs and members of the House of Lords in Westminster Hall when making state visits to Britain.

As speaker of the House of Commons, however, Bercow is one of three people who has the authority to block visiting figures from doing this.

The speaker said on Monday afternoon that addressing Parliament was an "earned honour" and not an invitation that came automatically with a state visit.

He said:

"What I will say is this. An address by a foreign leader to both Houses of Parliament is not an automatic right. It is an earned honour. Moreover, there are many precedents for state visits to take place to our country which do not include an address to both Houses of Parliament. That's the first point.

"In relation to Westminster Hall, there are three key holders to Westminster Hall: the speaker of the House of Commons, the speaker of the House of Lords and the lord great chamberlain. Ordinarily we are able to work by consensus and the hall would be used for a purpose such as an address or another purpose by agreement of the three key holders.

"I must say to the honourable gentleman, to all who signed his early day motion and to others with strong views about this matter on either side of the argument, that before the imposition of the migrant ban I would myself have been strongly opposed to an address by President Trump in Westminster Hall. After the imposition of the migrant ban by President Trump I am even more strongly opposed to an address by President Trump in Westminster Hall.

"And I concluded by saying to the honourable gentleman this. We value our relationship with the United States. If a state visit takes place, that is way beyond and above the pay grade of the speaker.

"However, as far as this place [the House of Commons] is concerned, I feel very strongly that our opposition to racism and to sexism and our support for equality before the law and an independent judiciary are hugely important considerations in the House of Commons."

The Queen is very good at addressing these types and she has dealt with much worse then Donald Trump so I have faith she can handle him well.

I wonder what this trip is going to cost and if he will get assassinated while there.

I am sure after his 4 years America will be more broken financially then it is now.

 

Trump is going to make a mess of U.S. foreign relations. Trump's Deplorables will love it, because they do not like foreigners, even if they are long term allies. Thoughtful Republicans are beginning to express apprehensions.

Many of us come from families who escaped poverty and mistreatment at the hands of British landowners. We saved your country for you in WW II. Piss us off by insulting our leader just because you don't like what he is doing to our country and you will have to start fighting your own economic and social battles.

Think what you will of President Trump, he is the leader of this country and, as such, deserves a certain level of respect until he directly insults your leaders. Remember, we put up with Churchill, losing thousands of our soldiers to his requirements to let the useless UK generals "Win one for home team."

 

I guess the snowflakes don't want Trump to invade their safe space.

Bush. During the Bush era, opposition to U.S. foreign policy and rising anti-Americanism were widespread in many regions of the world, but Obama’s election in November 2008 led to a significant improvement in America’s global image. The shift was especially dramatic in Western Europe, where assessments of Bush were grim, but subsequent views of Obama have been remarkably positive...

In contrast, ratings for Donald Trump are overwhelmingly negative. A median of just 9% trust the wealthy real estate developer to do the right thing in world affairs; 85% lack confidence in him.

In the four Asia-Pacific nations surveyed – Australia, China, India and Japan – Obama also receives relatively positive marks. Most Australians and Japanese give Clinton a positive rating and Trump a negative one.

The best way to show your disapproval for someone, is to not allow them to speak. NOT!

History has proven that those who try to muzzle opposing views ultimately fail.

And those who rely on poll numbers to determine national policy, also ultimately fail.

 

The UK is a lost country. They have stupid left leaning politically correct beaurocrats making the decisions and it's now over run with immigrants.

 

It's interesting. The first President in many years who acts to protect our security and he's demonized around the world. Granted, he's using a meat axe and in some ways he is misguided, but his motive is simple; keep those who would take away our freedom and our lives out of our country.

Shooter wonders; where did it get written that countries must take refugees. Setting aside for the moment the humanitarian arguments, how did it come to pass that when a shit hole country becomes even more of a shit hole the rest of the world is obligated to accept the effluent?

What's wrong with the UN stepping in, establishing safe zones, and keeping refugees right there, in their country, until the war or whatever is resolved? Why do people feel the urge to pack up their family and move across the world?

Wouldn't that be cheaper? More humane?

Think about it. If it hit the fan in the US, would we want to move to France, or England, or Spain, or Russia? A place where we don't speak the language even? Where we cannot easily be productive?

Of course the President should be allowed, no welcomed to speak at parliament.

The reason that we are out of Europe is nobody wants politicians in charge.

The reason a businessman is the President is that most people don't want dishonest politicians in charge.
