Sen. Tom Carper announces bill to give D.C. statehood

    OAN Newsroom
    UPDATED 1:15 PM PT – Wednesday, January 27, 2021

Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) recently introduced a bill aimed at making Washington, D.C. a state. He took to Twitter Wednesday to discuss his efforts to “give the over 700,000 D.C. residents a voice, vote and full representation in Congress.”

The so-called ‘Washington D.C. Admissions Act‘ has received support from several members of the Democrat Party. However, Republicans are concerned making D.C. a state might place two more Democrats in the Senate.

Democrats would need at least 60 votes in the upper chamber to pass the proposal, but they may only need a simple majority if the filibuster is abolished.

Why don't they just make it a city in the state of Md. and the government buildings are federal property. Good grief, that's just too fucking simple.
At any rate, I don't give a fuck one way or the other.

I read an idea, its more appropriate to assign DC people to boarder states

I'll go along with that, ridding D.C. of a corrupt leftist mayor would be delightful.

Bipartisan group of lawmakers introduce bill to make Puerto Rico a state

    OAN Newsroom
    UPDATED 5:00 PM PT – Tuesday, March 2, 2021

Lawmakers on Capitol Hill have introduced legislation to make Puerto Rico a state. During a press conference on Tuesday, a bipartisan group of lawmakers unveiled the Puerto Rico Statehood Admission Act, which has around 50 cosponsors.

The bill would pave a path to statehood for the long-time territory. Voters on the island would still need to approve joining the union in a federal referendum.

Puerto Rico’s GOP Resident Commissioner Jenniffer Gonzalez-Colon, who is a nonvoting member of the House, emphasized the push for statehood transcends politics.

“This is not an issue of the Republican Party. This is not an issue of the Democratic Party. This is an issue of democracy,” Gonzalez stated. “This is an issue of self-determination. This is an issue of the rights of American citizens living in Puerto Rico that need to be heard.”

Puerto Ricans approved statehood in a non-binding referendum back in November.

Tuesday is American Citizenship Day on the island, marking 104 years since residents were granted U.S. citizenship.

If you don't succeed, try try again ... this will be the 6th or 7th attempt to bring statehood to DC.

I have mixed feelings about it - on one hand, I like the fact that the seat of federal government is a special district, and not a state, as I think it segregates function away from the "states rights" process, which is needed to reduce conflict of interest. On the other hand, those who live in DC, and are not employees of the federal government, are taxed as if they were part of the country, but denied representational democracy in federal elections. Statehood is a slippery slope of competing interests, and I doubt it will ever come to fruition for DC, but other territories (Puerto Rico especially) may stand a better chance.

If I were Puerto Rican, I would want my island to be independent, its own nation, a national pride thing.....not gobbled up by America because of failed island economics and 2 Senate votes....democrats are using P.R. for a dem vote

Maybe if they made PR a state it could be as modern, safe and clean as Hawaii.

I was only there once so I didn't experience it all. Oldtown had armed guards carrying assault rifles. People had bars on their windows, cages around their patios to keep them and their property safe. It didn't seem as safe as anywhere in the Hawaiian Islands but that's just my opinion.

If the District of Columbia was a state then they would have a governor in charge of the National Guard and if domestic terrorists tried to storm the Capitol they could mobilize them immediately. Which as we can see would have been a huge advantage on January 6th because they could have already been called out to protect the Capitol before the attempted coup even took place.

Also we have to make the Virgin Islands a state after the job Del. Stacey Plaskett (D-Virgin Islands) did as an impeachment manager.

Puerto Rico is corrupt as fuck, changing that territory to a State wont change the fact that it is corrupt as fuck and has been for decades, actually has been forever.

Puerto Rico is closer to Venezuela, they both share the same corrupt politics.

Puerto Rico will do nothing but drain the U.S. tax payers, the territory has nothing to offer, it barely has enough to keep it's own economy afloat.

While I still encourage that the U.S. maintain it's territorial status with Puerto Rico, just because, however it will cost the U.S. tax payers hundreds and hundreds of $billions to support Puerto Rico.

As it's told, the Island is rich with oil and gas off it's shores, the tree huggers wont allow the extraction of such carbon creating fossil fuels.

Yeah sure the polls are claiming that the residence of the Island want to become a U.S. State, yet we all know how polls are manipulated, especially when those polls were conducted under the corrupt leadership of a Governor that has been convicted of stealing $ billions

How do you think making them a state would actually change his they are governed? From the I've read, the mayor of DC would effectively be the governor of the state, so nothing would change on that level.

How do you see this "states rights" changing things?
