4N6: After Japan had already announced its surrender...
Not to mention all the wars that the United States began for economic reasons.
Anyway, thank you USA, since George Bush became president, the world hate the USA more than Germany! ;-)

Urbane_Guerrilla: 4N6, sorry: Japan was saying they'd surrender on certain terms, while we had already determined that only unconditional surrender would be accepted. Same as Nazi Germany, btw.

George Bush sinned only in being stark and blunt in his language. This DID NOT, CANNOT, SHALL NOT make him wrong about it. I'd say it's the haters who are fucked up between the ears.

Urbane_Guerrilla: And D. Seigel's slightly-askew dialogue is I think perfectly fine... German. Not quite native English, which is of course rather too bad trying to write fiction. You need to be, like, Joseph Conrad (a Pole by birth) to manage the transition well enough to write fiction professionally in it.

Boy, was that ever an unsuccessful [zip-it].

Anonymous4: lol listening to you guys talk about the U.S. being all that cracks me up every time. most of the world might be smaller than you but its not out of fear of starting anything with you and being destroyed that stops us (I'm Canadian) but rather the rest of the world isn't full of themselves and looking for a fight or a weak nation to cry for help to show their strength. This is why we Dislike you, you're too full of yourselves and your power which has corrupted you :P

Anonymous12: Guys, seriously calm down. I may be American, but I am well aware of the fact that as a country our foreign policy is a little skewed. To be fair, every country's is or has been.

As a history buff, i know that if you name any country that's ever tasted power and you can write you a list of atrocities they've committed. America is no exception, but neither is Germany, England, Japan, Canada... The sad fact is most countries as we know them are founded on the blood of others.

As for the stereotyping of America, yes some are guilty of excess patriotism and interfering in others affairs, but that is largely on the part of the government, not the people, something that your countries are guilty of as well. You shouldn't stereotype all people from a country simply by that country's public image (I'm looking at you, anon4).

Urbane_Guerrilla, nothing against patriotism, but frankly, the "America saved your asses, we have power but show restraint" talk is kind of crap. We only came in at the end of the war, and that was after we'd been directly attacked by the Japanese. In an age where most major powers have nuclear arms, we don't instigate war for good reason (it rhymes with Mutually Assured Destruction). As for Bush, that's a subject I'm just gonna leave alone.

Seriously guys, who gives a fuck what country your from? I have friends from several foreign countries, and other than certain religious or cultural differences, it all boils down to the same shit in the end.

Anonymous14: Anon12: World War II started on the 1 September 1939. The US declared war on Japan on 8 December 1941. World War II ended on 2 September 1945 with the formal surrender of Japan. So, let's do some math. Start to finish it lasted 6 years, 1 day. The US entered the war 2 years, 91 days after the start.

Do tell me how the US "only came in at the end of the war". What revisionist history book are you following?

James_Wilson: Urbane_Guerrilla is right. I'm fucking tired of people saying "oh America nuked Japan we are the worst people in the world because they surrendered" etc. Japan wanted to keep Hirohito in charge if they surrendered. That would be like if we let Germany surrender but let them keep Hitler in charge.

The atomic bombs saved lives, that is fact. The Japanese were arming every one of their citizens, men and women with anything they could get their hands on, from mines to grenades to sharpened bamboo poles. They were preparing to force us to wipe the entirety of them out. Can you imagine all who would have died in an invasion logistics planners were estimating would last through all of 1946? We were preparing for a million deaths of our men alone.

TL;DR people who use the atomic bombings as proof that America has committed war crimes is an idiot, especially considering what the japanese did to our POWs and chinese civilians.

Look up "unit 731" if you are prepared to lose all faith in humanity. Dead serious.

Urbane_Guerrilla: @Anonymous: I think the fault wasn't in his history text, but in his memory. He may have been thinking of World War One, where indeed we were latecomers (l'Escadrille Lafayette etc. notwithstanding) -- and likely effectual war-shorteners. We were simply a lot fresher than everybody else, and the Kaiser's Germany was tottering under the strain by then anyway. It was totally time to quit.
