tehwalrus: Man, I love purple dark elves. Is that an official coloring in Forgotten Realms?

Zaxares: Officially, drow are supposed to have pitch-black skin. "Like onyx or pure darkness", as one sourcebook puts it. Nevertheless, many artists choose to give the drow a purplish skin in their artwork. This is probably a holdover from early editions of D&D.

Zaxares: Nah, the purple-skinned drow pre-dated WoW by many years. As a classic example, see any old artwork of Driz'zt Do'Urden. If anything, the Night Elves from WoW were probably influenced by D&D's drow.
