EnchantedDominion: Why don't these morons understand that most of us don't care if they guy's copying a pose? Those of us who mostly normal just want to jack off.
Baconface: He also made the bed frame go through her arm.
I like how everyone assumes this is a condemnation. I found the pic he based it off of independently in my files, was surprised by the obvious similarities.
I don't mind DLT tracing at all, because unlike most tracers, he has genuine artistic skill. But considering this is a DeviantArt pic, I thought the novelty was worth posting.
Anonymous4(1): Yeah, many artists use photos, real people, or 3d posing software for pose reference and some are even requested or commissioned to base a drawing of a character directly on a photograph. It is obvious he based it on this, but the contours do not really seem to match, so...
That aside, having seen what I think are most of the pics he did for JAB, they didn't seem as good as what he usually produces. The bed frame through the arm like you mentioned, for instance.
lltoon: ITT: anon and baconface can't tell the difference between tracing and referencing.
But considering DLT ran this pic by me to check for mistakes, I seem to have overlooked the bedframe problem. I feel it was partly my fault for not detecting it earlier during the sketch phase.
Anonymous5(1): @lltoon: It seems more like a mistake made in the inking process rather than a mistake during sketching, layer priority mistake and whatnot.
Anonymous9: Its funny, when someone like him do this kind of things seems that is ok, is not trace, must artist do the same, etc etc, etc, but when someone else do it, people eat that person alive with critiques, starting with him
dlt: This isn't tracing, it's using a reference. What I did do was that I probably followed it a bit too closely (especially with the clothing, I can't draw folding fabric for shit). Also, I usually stay clear from using pose references, mainly because I feel that there's a risk you may become too dependent on them (and also because it usually doesn't help you that much when you're drawing in a style with a complete lack of common sense regarding perspectives and proportions).
Nonetheless, you'd be surprised on how many fan artists are working this way. IIRC, almost all of Turk's artwork is based on photo refs... but he's just so darn good he knows how to copy the pose and the perspective and nothing else.
If there's something that made me mad about this pic being posted here, it's that I'm now aware of that horrible layering error. Argh!
Baconface: please, please don't call me a tracer because I'm not. You did dig up the exact same pic I used for the pose reference, though, good observation. I think this and the pic of Paulina as a cheerleader baring her butt cheeks and pussy were the only ones I did of the JABComix set where I used a photo reference for their poses.
LL: don't be too hard on yourself. Your attention was clearly elsewhere, lol
toongrowner: Whats so bad about, huh? SO long it looks awesome. serious. It's actual a good art training to readraw real life photos in different styles. :-)
dlt: A lot of pros also use reference sometimes. When Drew Struzan drew the poster for Back to the Future Part II, he had a photograph of Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd posing pretty much like they do in the finished illustration. I think that ref is actually somewhere in the extras for the BTTF Trilogy DVD box set (and thus probably in the Blu-Ray release as well).
I agree that this is all a gray area when it comes to art. When an artist has problems coming up with stuff that he's paid to do and there's a deadline, it becomes more and more tempting to use whatever helps you out with the task. I've come to accept that using photos like this is still okay (it's like using a model, except you don't have to pay her and she can keep the pose forever since it's a still photograph) although like I stated before, there's always the danger that you copy more than just the pose and the perspective.
However, when you take an actual piece of art, something that someone drew before, and then you trace over it and claim it as your own without stating its origins, then it's a serious problem. Editing other people's pics, I guess, is okay as long as the editor includes his own signature stating that he's edited it.
Clarifying these things is actually very important and I do not want to isolate myself from criticism. Also, I do not wish to be seen as a hypocrite who attacks tracers yet traces himself, mainly because I'm not a tracer and this is not tracing... but obviously some folks would not know the difference, not because they're stupid but because they just haven't learned about it yet.
Anonymous13: EVERYBODY uses a reference, even when you do it from memory YOU REFERENCE THE IMAGE IN YOUR BRAIN, this "Tracing is illegal" shit was made by retards that don't even draw at all so they believe art is like maths or something I don't really understand what they believe. But OK, leave this fucking site to DIE.
ForcedUser: I'm baffled as to how someone would even think this is definite proof the artist used this as a REFERENCE, let alone tracing. Seriously, this is NOT a unique pose.
Anonymous18: Have you seen Bioware's cahracter portaits in NWN and Tali in ME3?
Those are all actually direct tracings, and they're professionals. The worst this is is a reference, not even a trace.
biesiuss: Im with DLT on this; i reference on pics too, and in living people on the streets (how you think these Starfire and Raven Gap pics come out XD?), for the feet is mostly obligated. Having a reliable refrence for not screwing up too much is helpful.
Also is a lovely ass, damn...I wish I have seen her before xDDDD
Anonymous23: So many goddamn faggots on this site. I wouldn't mind but it drives some good artist away or makes them DNP. So fucking eat a dick, die of AIDS, and leave.
Only God can invent new things, people that call a PROVEN reference a trace, do not know the process of drawing, we trace even from memory, the problem comes when we reference an image available for everyone, keep in mind people watching this are mostly Engineers, Mathematicians, Chemists, and similar ones that do not understand about the creative process.
What would YOU do if you where God?, what would you do? think about it for a minute or an hour.
Anonymous24: Wow, there are still morons who don't know what "tracing" means. Let me educate you: it's when you put a piece of tracing paper over a picture and TRACE it. You can of course use computer programs for the same result nowadays too. The general requirement being you copy the contours instead of drawing the form yourself. What we have here is called a "reference" and it's completely permissible. I would have understood if DLT's style was photo-realistic and he had drawn really close to the reference, but how the fuck can someone mistake a picture done in a completely different style with cartoon proportions for a trace? You have to be either retarded or ignorant.
